A personal story from Sonja and Phil at Lilypad Fine Arts
When you run your own business, you get used to keeping lots of plates spinning. There are customers to look after, orders to complete, emails to answer and plans to make. There's always something that needs doing.
But what happens when life suddenly throws something at you that changes everything?
A few weeks ago, Phil became very unwell and spent time in hospital. He is now beginning a slow recovery journey.
Suddenly, everything changes
When something like this happens, your priorities change overnight. Your thoughts are elsewhere, you're worried about someone you love and you're facing an uncertainty you never expected.
Thankfully, our family and friends have been amazing. From cooking meals and helping with childcare to shopping and hospital visits, their support has meant so much to us. We love them so much, and will be forever grateful to them.
But alongside everything else, there's a big question sitting in the background: what happens to the business?
The business doesn't stop, even when life does
Running a small business is never easy, but managing one during a family health crisis brings a whole new set of challenges.
At Lilypad, we do picture framing and fine art scanning and printing. Picture framing is a skilled job that takes years to learn. It's not something someone can simply step in and do overnight. The same stands for Fine Art scanning – it takes patience and care to get the right reproduction of a piece of art.
Even in the gallery, there are so many things that need experience, from advising customers and pricing work to helping people choose the right frame for their artwork.
We want to keep everything running as smoothly as possible, but we also have to accept that things may take a little longer.
And that's ever so difficult to accept – especially when you pride yourself on working to a deadline, and getting work back to the customer in good time.
You worry about replying to customers, completing orders and letting people down. You want to be there for everyone, but sometimes there simply aren't enough hours in the day.
Learning to slow down
One thing this experience has taught us is that we're only human.
As small business owners, we put so much pressure on ourselves to get everything done and keep everyone happy. But sometimes life has other plans.
We've had to learn that it's okay to slow down, rearrange things and ask for a little patience.
It doesn't mean we care any less about our customers or our business. It just means we're doing our best during a difficult time.
Remembering what really matters
Since Phil joined me at Lilypad in 2024, we've continued to grow the business together, including developing our fine art printing services.
We're incredibly proud of what we've built and love being a part of a local creative community where artists can showcase their work and customers can discover something special.
But this experience has reminded us that, as important as the business is, family and health must always come first.
Orders can be completed, appointments rearranged and plans changed. Some things simply matter more.
Thank you for your support
We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has sent messages, offered help, shown kindness or simply been patient and understanding.
It really does mean the world to us.
Behind every small business are real people with families, worries and lives outside their working hours. Sometimes things happen that are completely beyond our control.
We remain incredibly passionate about Lilypad Fine Arts, and that won't change. We'll keep moving forward, doing what we can, one day at a time.
And if you're a small business owner going through something similar, remember:
It's okay to put life first. Your business is important, but so are you.
With all our love,
Sonja and Phil xx
