Does your artwork really need a frame?

One of the questions we’re often asked at Lilypad is whether a piece of artwork really needs a frame.

The simple answer is: not always.

As picture framers, you might expect us to say that everything should be framed, but we don’t believe in framing something simply because you think you’re supposed to.

Every piece is different, and sometimes the artwork itself tells us what it needs.

Some artwork looks wonderful without a frame

Canvas artwork is a great example. Depending on the style and how the edges have been finished, a canvas can look fantastic without being framed.

Some contemporary artwork also suits a very simple presentation, while other pieces really benefit from the structure and presence that a frame provides.

There isn't one solution that works for everything.

So what does a frame actually do?

A frame can obviously add to the appearance of artwork, but it also serves a practical purpose.

The right mount creates space between the artwork and the glazing. Suitable glazing can help protect against UV light, while the right backing and mounting materials will help protect the artwork over time.

Then, of course, there is the visual side. A frame can give a piece presence. It can draw your eye towards the artwork and help it sit comfortably within its surroundings.

We don't think your artwork has to match your room perfectly

We often hear customers say that they need a frame to match their furniture or décor.

Of course, it's lovely when everything works together, but don’t forget that décor changes over time - so with that in mind, think about what compliments the picture over the room.

And how about this? Sometimes contrast is what makes it work.

A traditional picture can look wonderful in a contemporary frame, and a modern piece can look surprisingly good in something more traditional. How about a certificate framed in a Jackson Pollock splattered frame? They really can make a statement!

That's one of the things we love about bespoke picture framing – there are so many possibilities.

The most important thing is that you love it

When you bring something into us at Lilypad, we’ll always look at the artwork with you.

We'll talk about what you like, where it's going to hang, what sort of look you're hoping for and, importantly, your budget.

Sometimes we'll recommend a more elaborate framing option.

Sometimes we'll suggest keeping things simple.

And occasionally, we might even say that we don't think you need to spend money on a frame at all.

For us, good framing isn't about selling the most expensive option.

It's about finding the right solution for your artwork and you.

So if you're not sure whether something needs framing, bring it in and have a chat with us.

There really is no pressure at all, and there are never any silly questions.

Sometimes the best place to start is simply with:

“What do you think?”
