Glass Options Explained: Which Is Best for Your Artwork?

Choosing the right glass for your frame is just as important as choosing the frame itself. Different types of glazing offer different levels of clarity, protection, and finish.

At Lilypad Fine Arts, we guide customers through the best options for their artwork, and here’s a simple breakdown.

Standard Glass

Standard glass is the most basic option and offers:

  • clear visibility

  • basic protection from dust and handling

However, it does create reflections and does not offer much UV protection.

Non-Reflective Glass

Non-reflective glass reduces glare, making it easier to view artwork clearly from different angles.

This is ideal for:

  • brightly lit rooms

  • detailed artwork

  • gallery-style displays

However, it can give a picture a ‘milky’ look and has a very low UV protection.

Art Glass

Art Glass combines:

  • anti-reflective properties

  • high clarity of artwork

  • UV protection of either 70%, 90% or Museum quality which is 99%

It enhances visibility while offering excellent protection, making it one of the best options for valuable artwork.

Acrylic Glazing

Acrylic is lightweight and shatter-resistant, making it suitable for:

  • large frames

  • high-traffic areas

  • safety-conscious environments

  • Is available in both standard and Art Glass quality finishes

It can scratch easily and is an increasingly expensive product.

Choosing the Right Option

The best glass depends on:

  • where the artwork will hang

  • lighting conditions

  • the value of the piece

  • your budget
